Brushing teeth and Juicing

Many of my clients ask about the hazards of drinking juices and the effect it has on their teeth. Here are a few bits of information for you to ponder over:

1. Dr Peter Alldritt, chairman of the Australian Dental Association's oral health committee, states that  sometimes brushing too soon after drinking juices can damage your teeth.
"Fruits, particularly lemons or pineapples, all have a reasonable level of acidity in them and what they do is soften the enamel," he said. "If you then go and brush your teeth straight away you're going to damage the softened enamel." Waiting to brush for at least 30 minutes gives your mouth time to produce enough saliva to neutralize the acidity, Alldritt says. This saliva helps your teeth to harden and absorb more calcium, which then acts like a coat of armour. "Saliva contains calcium and phosphate ions and teeth also contain these ions, so saliva acts as a reservoir of calcium and phosphate for your teeth," he said. "Saliva also contains enzymes and buffers which neutralize acid and return the pH of your mouth to neutral over time."

It is recommended after you juice you rinse your mouth out with water to allow the natural saliva to do its work in neutralising the acidity and brushing your teeth half an hour later.

An alternative is to drink through a straw or to drink your juice in a reasonable manner and not let it stay in the mouth for too long.

Do keep in  mind most of the juices on the plan have vegetables included which helps in keeping down the acidity level of the juice. And, although acidic in nature, once broken down by the body the juices are alkaline in the body.

Happy Juicing

IS THERE A NEED TO DETOX??

Many of your reading this blog will be on Day 2 of the 7lb in 7 days program. You may be struggling a little bit wondering what it is all about. You may be doubting yourself as to whether you need to be "depriving" your body of its usual foods. Let me share a little analogy if I may?

Try and imagine a fish tank with a filter attached to it. This filter is keeping the water clean and healthy for the fish. In order for the fish to be in optimum health, they are relying on that pump to keep the water clean. Now imagine that the fish tank has too many fish in it, that they have been fed too much or that a slime has invaded the tank that is rapidly spreading. The filter is still chugging away but it has limited capabilities, it needs a hand here!

Now imagine that your liver is your "filter". With pressures of modern day society ranging from stress, to poor food choices, too much coffee/alcohol, the list is endless for many people. Your liver (your filter) is unable to cope with such an overload. Other organs of elimination come into play. A rash on your skin could well be that the liver is not working properly and hence the skin has to take over in getting rid of the toxins building up in the body. I could go on but I will not as you get my point.

By "detoxing" we are assisting the liver in reducing the burden being placed on it. For one week it is having its own holiday. And just like when most of us come back from a relaxing holiday we are rearing to get on with life and be renewed.

When you sip your next juice, says a big CHEERS to your liver!!

APPLES, APPLES, APPLES,,,So many apples on the 7lb program. Read on to discover the secret of apples.

Apples are naturally low in kilojoules and fat and contain many vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Apples are low in sodium thus will help prevent excess water weight commonly referred to as fluid retention. Apples are a great addition to the 7lb program due to flushing out any expanding fat cells that holds onto your fluids making you feel like a walking swimming pool at times. By releasing fluid that you may be carrying around in your body, come day 3 you will feel a spring in your step due to the fact that you are not longer carrying copious litres of fluid around.
Jason makes many references to people who don't take in enough water may think they are hungry and craving more food, when what they actually crave is hydration. High-water foods like apples keep you hydrated.

Apples have an abundance of soluble pectin. The pectin found in apples can prevent your body from absorbing too much fat as well as helping to release fat. Pectin is also a strong appetite suppressant that keeps you satisfied during the 7 days of the program. Pectin is also great for helping to stabilise blood sugar levels, so you get none of the sugar spikes that is often associated with highly sweetened/processed foods. Pectin is also great for keeping you "regular" during the program due to its fibre content.

Remember to always wash your apples before juicing them. Do be aware that some supermarket apples are often waxed, which seals in pesticide residues that may be on the skins, so try and buy from local green grocers where you can ask if they have waxed their apples. All the goodness of the apples are found in the peel so you shouldn't peel apples to remove the wax. If the only apples you can find have been waxed, soak the apples in a sink full of water with vinegar add and leave for an hour or so. When you return any pesticide residues should be removed. So just rinse and they are ready for use.

REFINED FRUIT JUICE

I was discussing the merits of using fruits to sweeten porridge when a client let it slip that he was adding fruit from a packaged container as opposed to fresh fruit. This led to a long discussion of fresh vs processed and thought I would share with you some findings.
Firstly I had to go to the supermarket to access the ingredients found in packaged fruits as this information is not readily available on their websites. I will not mention names here as all manufacturers seemed to do the same thing. There are too many varieties out there anyway. I ventured off to the supermarket thinking this would be easy. Read the ingredients, make my assessment of the ingredients and move on. The reality was that nothing is what it seems.  I have been working on this all morning very little information gained. Let me explain.
Sample one: Ingredients was 58% fruit, with refined fruit juice and ascorbic acid. This had me baffled. The product came in a plastic container so I could see the fruit packed inside. If there was 58% fruit, what was the other 42%? And then there was the Refined Fruit Juice!! Do you know that I could not find any information on what exactly Refined Fruit Juice (RFJ) meant?? I was unable to see if this was simply the juice from the fruit that occurs naturally or what it meant. Of course it is not natural juice or else this would be written in capital letters for all to see. No refined fruit juice could simply mean the water the fruit was cleaned in, washed in perhaps, who knows?
I decided the best way to compare fresh fruit and packaged fruit is to do a side by side nutritional chart. The results were quite amazing and here they are:

Peaches Packaged in RFJ Whole peach
  140gm 175gm
FAT 0.1GM 0
CHO 20.6GM 17
SUGARS 16.0GM 15
FIBRE 1.3GM 3
PROT 1.1GM 2
SODIUM 8MG 0
Kj 354 275

What do the results tell you?? The 8gm of sodium is due to the preservative factor. There is double the fibre found in fresh peaches vs packaged making me ask have the fruits been tampered with? How can there be less fibre??  The fruit in packaged products is certainly slimier and softer, has this evolved due to consumer demand? Have the manufacturers decided to get rid of the firmness and fibre because people are now too lazy to chew?

Next time you use processed over fresh, you are not really adding one of your five a day. You are more adding just another processed product the body has to work twice as hard to digest it, which can be difficult for those under a lot of stress, but that is for another blog.

bye for now
